Sometime last year I bought two skeins of some lovely Artyarns superwash merino yarn (quite expensive for me, plus shipping from the States) and ever since i've been looking out for a nice pattern that I can make it with, something special that i'll be able to keep for a while.
I thought 'great', and cast on for the butterfly hat on the weekend with one skein, keeping the other for the lace pattern to turn it into a cowl instead of a scarf (i'm well through the hat now - up to the second pattern repeat - its nice and easy). Except now i'm having second thoughts. The hat is really more of a beanie than a beret, which I was ok with to start with because I was so happy to have found the pattern, but i've never really looked that great in beanies with my short hair, so i'm not sure how much wear it will get. On top of this, I was looking at Mary Heather's 365 photo for yesterday and on the bus this morning it came to me - I should make the same thing, using the butterfly lace from the scarf! That way i'll get lots of wear out of it, its in fashion at the moment but something that will always come in handy, can be passed down to children, yada yada yada, as well as learning how to design the lace to fit it myself!
So what do we think? Should I go home tonight and rip out the hat and start charting the lace for a shawlette? Or do we like the idea of a beanie with the butterfly pattern instead? Help me, blog!

I love that yarn! It's a beauty. I vote for the shawlette. I would think you'd get more use out of it.
Of course, I don't know what your beanie looks like at the moment.
Decisions, decisions.
I'm going to Tweet my reply to you too - but I say rip it out and do the shawlette. Sounds like it will work much better for many reasons and get more wear. And yarn that pretty should be made into something you will love forever!!
That yarn is BEAUTIFUL!! Whatever you use it for will be amazing, but I agree with the above-- a shawlette would be really great :)
